MINERALS

Minerals are another compound which is only required in small amounts in the body. These can be broken down into different mineral salts. If you look on the mineral chart, you will see the different names, and what they do for our bodies.

WATER

Water is the most important molecule in biology. We can all live without water for about three days. If there has been no intake of water you would start to dehydrate, causing serious consequences, leading to death.

The average body carries about 70% of water in weight, which needs replacing often because it is lost through breathing, urinating, sweating (cell respiration) and faeces.

The functions of water include;

·        Needed for most environment

·        Participates in all chemical reactions in the body / cells

·        Helps to dilute / moisten food

·        Regulates body temperature

·        Helps transport mixed with blood / fluid around the body

·        Dilutes waste products and poisonous substances in the body

·        Assists in excretion of waste products, (urine & faeces)

FIBRE

Fibre is not classed as a nutrient; however it is still essential for a balanced diet. Fibre is not digested or absorbed into the bloodstream; it passes through the digestive system. This fibre can be found in bran or certain parts in plants and meat.

There are two types of fibre;

·        Soluble (oats)

·        Insoluble (bran)
