LUPUS

Not many people in today’s society have heard of the disease LUPUS. This disease however is more common than leukaemia, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy and sickle cell anaemia. It is a disorder of the immune system. It is not an infection, and not contagious. This disease can affect a person regardless of their gender, age and race. However it is more common in females of child bearing age and more so in Afro-Caribbean's, African and Asian people than white Caucasians. There are as many as forty thousands diagnosed people in the UK affected with this disease.

People who are suffering with this disease can face a long battle before it is diagnosed. There are numerous symptoms that manifest from this disease, but can be diagnosed as something else. This could result in an individual suffering with the disease for years. Friends and family and even your local G.P. may start to believe that the sufferer is a hypochondriac. This can lead to heavy bouts of severe depression. The long term prospects affect the life and lives of those around the sufferer.

Before a G.P. recognises the coincidences between the differences of the illnesses the sufferer would have made numerous visits to their surgery. Until a pattern is established when the illness occurs the sufferer has to try and convince their G.P. that they are truly ill.

This disorder can take over the person’s life in both social and working conditions. They may feel so ill at times and have frequent absences from work, resulting in termination of their contract. If a person where to lose their employment, this could result, and probably would in dependency of state benefits. This can affect the household entirely. Hardship could be a result of this.

The society that we live in today is very health conscious, but if you were to look in your local G.P. unit or hospital where they provide you with numerous pamphlets about certain illnesses, you would not find one about LUPUS. This illness has to be recognised, and is on the increase.
